An In-Depth Guide for Home Renovation

An In-Depth Guide for Home Renovation

An In-Depth Guide for Home Renovation

As much as its results are rewarding, home renovation is a living hell. Regardless of whether you are renovating the house you currently live in, or the one you just bought, whether it is to fit your changing needs or to sell, there are certain things you should not overlook.

Budget and estimates

Determine what you want to do and which parts of your house you need to renovate. Make a list of priorities. Once you have that done, get the contractors in to give you an estimate. The Estimate is probably not going to be the final price, so round up the amounts and see how much of your list you can afford. Start from the top priorities and make sure you can finance those. Also, it would be good to do things in the same order as on the priority list just in case you happen to run out of money but I would not suggest even starting if your budget is that tight.

Help needed

If you need to hire a professional to do any part of the renovation job (you will), make sure you get a top quality service. Check the references the contractors give you and see if you can find any reviews online.  Try to find out whether the contractors you are looking at are currently working on something else as they tend to accept a job even though they are aware they cannot manage it all because they do not want to lose it. This usually proves to be an issue when it comes to deadlines. The professionals you will most likely be after are plumbers, carpenters, builders, painters, architects, landscapers and interior designers.

Why hire landscapers, interior designers, and architects?

Sure, there are a lot of things you can do yourself, but there are even more things you think you can do yourself. You need an architect if you are planning on remodeling any part of your house, especially if you are building an extension. A landscaper will come in handy in case you have money left over to fix up your backyard, they can put your wishes into a meaningful whole. An interior designer is there to help you get the best out of space once remodeled. They can also assist you with installing new lights as home renovation is the right time to add more lights and power sockets into a house.

Plumbing, heating, and electricity

This is the perfect time to check your houses wiring and plumbing. Perhaps they require some maintenance. Also, as I have mentioned above, this is the right time to install additional power sockets as there are never too many. Plumbers from The Relining Company remind us that plumbing needs to be taken into account when remodeling, so it is best to get a professional to work with the architect on this or based on the architectural plan. Rethink your heating, is it worm throughout the house or are some rooms slacking? If there is an issue, it should be taken care of now. Think ecology and energy efficiency and find other ways of keeping your house warm or building one of the modern ecological heating systems such as a geothermal heating pump.

A Bathroom

This one probably requires the most work done. You need to take down your old tiles, see if you need to get new elements and people usually do as they do not want to bring old into the new. You will also need new fixtures. Depending on your and your family members needs you might need to install certain extra details. If you have an elderly person living with you, you may want to install certain features such as a walk-in shower or grab bars to help them out as they are not getting any younger. These can also increase your propertys price if you decide to sell one day.

Kitchen

Apart from remodeling and possibly adding an extra closet or a pantry, there are several other things to be done in your kitchen. It probably needs to be re-plumbed and the cupboards remodeled. Consider adjusting the height of countertops for children to be able to reach as well as the elderly if they want to sit down when preparing food. Make sure you have enough space for the appliance you are using on daily bases and enough worktops to prepare meals. You will probably need new fixtures, not only for the kitchen but for the entire house, and it is always advised to put everything on paper first, so you know exactly how much you're spending.

The final advice is to be patient as eventually it will all be done. Regardless of what you believe at first, find a place to stay at while the work is being done, living in the house will drive you even further insane. Also, keep in mind that once you have everything ready, you'll need to keep it squeaky clean to be able to fully enjoy your beautiful new home

An Idiot's Guide to Using Copy Machines

An Idiot's Guide to Using Copy Machines

An Idiot's Guide to Using Copy Machines

Copy machines have been known to confuse and perplex, and with good reason; they are some of the most technologically fickle pieces of equipment known to man. They are, however, extraordinarily useful, and are great to reproduce any item, document, photograph, whathaveyou. Some copiers even have more complicated features and can be more daunting for the new office worker.

1. On: If the copier is off, you will have to turn it on. Some copiers require a password or awake mode, from a power conserving sleep. Usually pressing the Copy button will wake it up.

2. Paper: Having paper in the copy machine tray is necessary to operating your copier. If you are using a smaller copier, then it is probably on the front end of the machine. Standard copier paper is 8 x 11 inches, so if you want to copy an address on an envelope, or if you have a larger paper size, you will have to resize the paper tray accordingly.

3. The document you want to copy should be placed under the lid of the copier, and on a glass panel. On the glass panel are lines that will dictate the length and width of the document you want to copy. Figure out how it aligns with the guiding lines. Close the lid.

4. Choose how many copies: On the control panel, where the buttons and maybe a small LCD screen are, you should be able to choose how many copies you desire. Using arrows or a type pad, after you do this the next step is sizing.

5. Sizing: If you want to enlarge or reduce the size of your copied document, you can do so by finding the corresponding button. Remember that it will copy on the paper you have inserted. If you are copying an ID or passport, you may want a larger copy, but if the document is blown up too big, it may be foggy or impossible to read. On the screen of your office copiers you may be able to see a digital readout of the document you want copied on the paper.

6. Special Features: Double sided copying, copying two copies on the same page, collate, holes punched, and stapling options are all extra and you should ask someone at work or consult a copy machine instruction manual to learn exactly how to use these features.

7. Copy: Choose black and white or color if you're working with color copiers. Press the start button on your office copiers, and watch the copies slide onto the tray. Usually the button is green and the tray is on the side or bottom of the color copiers.

This isn't rocket science, but it can be trick if you're a novice. If my article leaves you confused, don't be afraid to ask someone how to work your office copiers.

All You Needed to Know About Egger Kitchen Worktops

As far as kitchen worktops are concerned Egger ranks up right there with the very best. As a brand Egger specializes in contemporary worktops, which is what so many stylish homemakers want in their kitchens these days. Egger develops its contemporary post-formed worktops in such a way that they are able to coordinate with the newest color tones in the domain of kitchen design. The company enjoys a unique position in this particular market segment for the simple fact that it produces the worktops and the materials that are needed in order to make them.

What does Egger do?

Apart from Egger worktops, the organization produces other kitchen products such as end panels and doors. This means from Egger you can buy almost all the furniture that you need for your kitchen and give it a coordinated look. As a brand Egger offers to you wood grains that can be both rustic and exotic, cool stones, and urban finishes. This is coupled with expert designing that makes your space become full of life and gives you the kind of kitchen that you have always wanted.

Egger Worktops - Wood grains

The wood grain egger worktops are available in several varieties that may be mentioned as follows:

   White Fleetwood
   Coco Bolo
   Natural Hickory
   Natural Hamilton Oak
   Grey Bardolino Oak
   Truffle Brown Denver Oak
   Graphite Fleetwood
   Pasadena Pine
   Natural Carini Walnut
   Thermo Pine
   Mali Wenge

Egger specializes in wooden panels.

White Fleetwood

White Fleetwood is a deeply brushed surface that can be used in order to create a look that is a lot similar to sandblasted timber. It can be used in a modern, as well as a vintage, kitchen.

Coco Bolo

Coco Bolo is a natural and exotic worktop. It can be used in order to create a look that is both premium and ideal for your kitchen. More than anything else, these worktops will not overpower your kitchen they would blend in and enhance its look. Coco Bolo works really well when paired with dark flooring designs and neutral solid colors!

Natural Hickory

Natural Hickory is a wooden laminate worktop that looks natural and beautiful. It is a lot similar to a crown cut oak in terms of style. This worktop comes with plenty of detailing as well as variations in color. These variations can be as different as dark and sandy tones.

Natural Hamilton Oak

Natural Hamilton Oak is also known as Natural Arlington Oak. Its tone is a natural golden one. It also has some rustic features such as cross-fires and knots. This is why these wooden worktops come with a classic appeal that lasts for a really long period of time.

Grey Bardolino Oak

As far as trends for untreated wood are concerned Grey Bardolino Oak is perhaps the very best option that you could ask for. It looks as if it has been taken straight out of the saw. The Grey Bardolino Oak of Egger replicates such a look with perfection. Thanks to the broad color range in which this is available and the supposed imperfections the decor of this product is lively, to say the least.

Truffle Brown Denver Oak

Truffle Brown Denver Oak is also known as Truffle Riverside Oak and these worktops too have their imperfections as well as knots. If you are looking for a rustic look you can go for this one as well. It would work well with lighter colors such as grey and white. Much of this compatibility can be attributed to factors such as its color arrangement. It goes well with light stone flooring designs as well. Thanks to its surface texture of ST10 you get a really authentic finish as well.

All About Electric Stoves

All About Electric Stoves

Image source: http://www.elmirastoveworks.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/1954-All-Electric-Range-Buttercup-Yellow-624x796.jpg

All About Electric Stoves

Electric stoves for cooking have been perfected to such an extent that they are a great convenience, and in places where the cost of electricity does not greatly exceed that of gas they are used considerably. In appearance, electric stoves are very similar to gas stoves. The oven a is located at one side and contains a broiler pan. On top of this stove are openings for cooking, into which fit lids that have the appearance of ordinary stove lids, but are in reality electrical heating units, called hotplates. Heat for cooking is supplied by a current of electricity that passes through the hotplates, as well as through similar devices in the oven, the stove being connected to the supply of electricity at the connection-box. The heat of the different hotplates and the oven is controlled by several switches e at the front of the stove. Each of these switches provides three degrees of heat--high, medium, and low--and just the amount of heat required for cooking can be supplied by turning the switch to the right point. Below the switches are several fuse plugs that contain the fuses, which are devices used in electrical apparatus to avoid injury to it in case the current of electricity becomes too great.

It is not absolutely necessary to have flue connections for an electric stove, as such a stove does not require a draft and gives off no products of combustion to be carried away. In fact, one of the favorable points about an electric stove is that it produces no dirt and causes no inconvenience. When the cooking is done, the electricity can be turned off, after which the stove quickly cools. When electricity is used for cooking, cooking utensils, methods, and recipes can be applied in the same ways as when other means of producing heat are employed.

SMALL ELECTRIC UTENSILS - In addition to electric stoves, there are a number of smaller electrical cooking utensils that can be attached to an electric-light socket or a wall socket. Among these are percolators, toasters, hotplates, or grills, chafing dishes, egg poachers, and similar devices. The toaster is arranged so that bread to be toasted may be placed on each side, as well as on top, of an upright part that gives off heat when the current of electricity is turned on. The grill is so constructed that a pan for cooking may be placed under and on top of the part that gives off heat.

Adventure Boot Camps in the Great Outdoors

Adventure Boot Camps in the Great Outdoors

One subject often covered in the media today is that of obesity. And being overweight is not restricted to older people. Teenagers and even young kids can have a weight problem. For parents wanting to help their child loose some weight and yet allow their son or daughter to have a darn good time in doing so, an adventure boot camp is one of the best answers. It's fun, healthy and beneficial.
There is a lot of talk about nutrition and diet, about exercise and healthy living and yet one of the best products we can consume is free and easily available. Vitamin D in the form of sunshine has many valuable properties and on an adventure boot camp, participants are out in the open air and collecting their complimentary supply of vitamin D.

And being outdoors has a number of other benefits. When we exercise outdoors through walking, climbing, wading, paddling, etc., we are using our muscles all over our body and in a natural way. Being inside on gym equipment definitely has benefits but exercising outdoors wins hands down.

Other benefits include the scenery. On an adventure boot camp, campers are not restricted to the surrounds of the base camp. Far from it, as participants venture into the wilderness and get a free view of the glorious surrounds. That in itself is beneficial as a boost to the spirits helps back up the physical improvements.

Of course the teens reside in the adventure boot camp and that means first class food. None of the rubbishy food they might be tempted to consume back home. There are no shops at the camp or anywhere nearby and so campers rely on the nutritious and wholesome foods prepared by the camp kitchen staff.

Back home, working out on your gym equipment, you face the wall or maybe watch TV or listen to some music. When exercising outdoors you encounter great variety. You don't go the same way each day, you have all manner of different land formations and you can commune with nature. It's a wonderful package which has the bottom line of helping you get fit, lose weight and return home a much happier and healthier young person.

You might think twice about the cost of sending your teen on an adventure boot camp but remember a few facts. The gym equipment you might use at home will cost a pretty penny and if your child was at home, you have the cost of feeding them and of running your house, apartment and car to look after your teen. None of these costs apply when they're on camp so the cost is not so great after all.

Making money, being successful and working hard are all attributes most of us subscribe to. But without good health we can have all manner of problems. If you've got your health, the rest of life's riches can follow and one of the best ways to obtain and maintain good health is through the right exercise and a nutritious diet. Your teen will get both of these in spades plus wonderful scenery, and a break from the pressures of the big city and more when they join an adventure boot camp.

Acupuncture Can It Help Keep You Healthy

Acupuncture Can It Help Keep You Healthy

Acupuncture Can It Help Keep You Healthy

Acupuncture is one of the oldest ways of healing on earth. It is derived from traditional Chinese medicine, and its goal is to repair and preserve health by stimulating certain points on the human body. The Spokane Acupuncture practitioners include the traditions from China, Japan, Korea, and other countries where acupuncture is considered a part of complementary and alternative medicine.

But What Is Spokane Acupuncture and is it right for me?

The word "acupuncture" means to prick with a needle. It is a technique of inserting and manipulating fine threadlike needles into certain points on the anatomy to relieve pain for a healing objective. As stated by the traditional Chinese medical principle, acupuncture points are located on meridians which are pathways in the body where vital energy and your chi is believed to flow. There is no known reason or foundation for the specific points or meridians. It is believed that acupuncture maintains the balance of your body, your yin and yang. They use it because sickness is thought to be an imbalance of yin and yang which can block you chi along the pathways.

Can Spokane Acupuncture Really Keep You Healthy?

It has been in active scientific research since the late 20th century, but it is still controversial between Western medical researchers and clinicians. Because spokane acupuncture is invasive it is hard to create studies that have correct controls. Some studies show that as a treatment it can be described through the placebo effect meaning, its all psychological and it only works because you believe it works. Other studies propose that Spokane acupuncture can be effective in treatment of specific conditions. They have looked into:

Whether it works for specific health conditions, similar to chronic back pain, headache, and osteoarthritis of the knee
How it might work, such as what happens in the brain during treatment
Ways to better recognize and understand the possible neurological properties or meridians and chi points
Methods and tools for improving the quality of the research.

There is a universal agreement with the health organizations the acupuncture is safe when administered by a well-trained professional using sterile needles, but further research is needed.

So finally, acupuncture could work for your health if you psychologically believe that Spokane Acupuncture will work, or you could just try spokane acupuncture for fun, but in the end the best way to stay heathy is the stay in shape and eat right.

A Simple Guide to Choosing Your Garage Storage

A Simple Guide to Choosing Your Garage Storage

Image source: http://www.listotic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Lots-of-clever-and-creative-ways-to-organize-your-garage-It-really-is-hard-to-get-motivated-when-you---re-garage-looks-like-a-dump..jpg

A Simple Guide to Choosing Your Garage Storage

Many people use their garage to store anything that they cant or would rather not have in their living space. With valuable space at a premium, people are often forced to keep their lawn mower, gardening implements, tools, sports materials, bicycles and seasonal items in their garage. If you have room in your garage for anything but your car, then it might be time to invest in quality garage storage solutions.

Step into your garage and what do you see? Maybe some unopened boxes from when you moved in a few years ago. You have no idea whats inside them but you also dont want to throw them away. You see your old golf clubs, musty and covered in cobwebs. You try to remember the last time you played golf but it escapes you. You move around some boxes to make space and you find the bikes your children have outgrown, and toys they no longer play with. You remember your youngest is going to uni in a couple of months. But wheres your car? Oh, right, its parked out in the street.

Quality storage can help give your garage some much-needed organisation. Some would say, Garages are meant to be messy. Anybody who has said that has never had the benefit of a tidy garage. Organising your garage can help reduce the clutter, make finding and storing things easier and more convenient, and most importantly, free up space. Getting the most out of your garage space is the goal, and to do so you must plan carefully what to store, how to store it, and where it should be placed. Here are a few tips and pointers for taking your garage back.

What to keep in your garage

Even if youve invested in expensive home security cameras and alarms, your garage is rarely as secure as the rest of your home. Garage doors and windows are most likely to be left unlocked or open. If youre storing items of value in your garage or thinking of doing it, It is important that you take measures to secure the space to prevent unauthorised access and theft.

The conditions in the garage are also sure to be different from the rest of your home. Garages are seldom climate-controlled, and you will need to modify the room before storing items that are sensitive to temperature and humidity. However, garages are excellent spaces for storing non-perishable food so you better take advantage of bulk discounts at your supermarket.

Measuring the garage

When taking measurements for anything, be sure to measure twice and do it once more to be 100% certain. Getting the wrong measurements could cost you a lot of time, effort and money. Be sure to get the accurate width, length and height of the area where you want to add storage. Double-check if the walls are at an exact right angle.

When planning the layout, take into consideration the locations of plumbing and wiring as the storage solutions may impede access to these. You dont want to tear down your cabinets just so the plumber can inspect a pipe that may or may not be leaky.

Lastly, when thinking about the space you need, volume almost always beats area. Storage with a small footprint but wide clearance is always better than one with a wide area but low clearance.

Storage cabinets

Storage cabinets are the most common storage solution for garages. Many people find them to be the best option, as they can be used to store practically anything. Storage cabinets typically fall under three categories: base cabinets, wall cabinets and utility storage.

If you want to maximise your storage without using floor space, then mounted wall cabinets are your option. If not set too high, mounted wall cabinets allow for immediate access to storage without taking up space on the floor. Wall mounted cabinets can be either horizontal (wide footprint, low clearance), or vertical (narrow footprint, high clearance).

For freestanding storage, you can always go for a utility storage cabinet. Perfect for small lawn care items, gardening supplies and other accessories, utility storage cabinets can comfortably fit long, narrow items, and can include partitions and interior shelving.

Base cabinets are similar to modular kitchen counters, and are a cheaper alternative to inbuilt cabinets. A standard base cabinet has two or three drawers, or a combination of drawers and shelves. They can also include features like key locks, countertops and rubber edges for protection.

Storage racks

If you own bicycles, sports equipment or gardening tools like spades and rakes, storage racks are a must-have for your garage. Storage racks allow easy access to commonly-used objects while keeping clutter and accidents to a minimum. It can be either wall-mounted or freestanding.

You can have a dedicated storage rack for your sports equipment, one for gardening and another one for general hardware. These racks can feature protective mesh, utility trays or side hooks.

Ceiling mounted racks are useful for seasonal or rarely used items. They utilize ceiling space instead of wall or floor space, so the positioning of lights in the garage should be taken into account. Ceiling mounted racks are only recommended if space is limited.

Conclusion

Clearing your garage and organising its contents and layout takes practice and planning. Check your garage needs and wants so you can optimise the space to its fullest extent. But adding in racks and cabinets is half the work you have to strive to keep your garage clean and free of pests. Your garage may be better organised now, but its barely better than your old one if its infested with rats and cockroaches.

A Quick Guide to Garage Shelving and Cabinets

When you're at the department store, you're bound to see endless rows and stacks of storage products of all shapes and sizes. We've all thought in one way or another, "If I can get one of those, maybe I can get my life more organised." While having a storage box or two can certainly help in making your home tidier, it's not as simple as getting the shiniest plastic box at the discount store.

One quick trip to a big-box store and you will see that storage tools come in many forms. Not all storage tools are designed the same. Storage comes in a near-infinite variety of sizes, shapes, colours and materials. If you're thinking of getting some storage for your home, you have to know what you're delving into first.

The garage

In this day and age, very few people use their garages for its intended purpose. Many people have turned their garage into an overflow storage room, full of garage shelving and racking. For people who want to organise their homes, starting from the garage seems like the logical step. Garages are often the most difficult to optimise, and once they have done so, the rest of the home will follow.

The first step is usually to compile an inventory of the items in the garage. Divide the items into three groups: frequently-used items, items that require easy access, and items for long-term storage. Anything else that doesn't fall under the three has to be discarded or given away. For instance, the bicycle falls under the first group, while gardening tools fall under the second. The reasoning is that bicycles are used often while gardening tools don't have to be readily accessible. Old clothing, mementoes and holiday decorations fall under long-term storage. Once you have completed your garage inventory, you can begin planning your garage storage system.

Cabinets

Garage cabinets are ideal for storing small objects that you need immediate access to such as cleaning supplies, power tools and other hardware.

This type of storage is also ideal if you have a lot of objects that are considered clutter. Normally, you want to keep them in safe storage so that you'd have easy access to them while keeping them out of sight. The secure nature of cabinets also makes them excellent for storing light, dust and heat-sensitive items such as chemicals. If you want to maximise your storage, partner a good cabinet with some garage shelving.

Cabinets are made of a diverse sort of materials. They range from cheap and dependable plywood, particle board and plastic to the relatively pricier and more durable metal. The most affordable cabinets are often made of particle board. However, not all particle boards are made the same. Look for cabinets made of industrial particle board instead of standard particle boards.

Particle boards, while cheap, are susceptible to moisture. If you want a cabinet that is resistant to moisture, look for plastic cabinets or laminated cabinets. Laminated cabinets are made of particle board or plywood coated with a laminate or plastic layer. This protective layer makes for a water-resistant and more durable version of a particle board cabinet.

Shelves

Garage shelving is designed to store longer and bigger items such as electronics, gardening tools, boxes and other hardware. They can be either closed or open, allowing for greater versatility in planning.

Wall-mounted shelves are often paired with cabinets. While cabinets are more expensive than shelves, this storage format allows for greater flexibility in space options. Most wall shelves are open, which means you may need to use containers and the like if you need to store large objects that have to be protected from dust and moisture.

Garage shelving offers more space than cabinets and are more cost-efficient. They are made of stronger materials such as steel and aluminium since they are designed to handle heavy objects.

A Meat Mincer is a Must Have for Every Kitchen

A Meat Mincer is a Must Have for Every Kitchen

A Meat Mincer is a Must Have for Every Kitchen

The modern kitchen today is supplied with many different large and small appliances. However, it is rare to rummage through the cabinets in any given kitchen today and locate a meat mincer. Years ago, this was probably one of the first small appliances developed to simplify the many chores that were part of preparing meals for the common family. Since most meat eaten on the family farm was either raised on the farm or acquired through hunting the nearby woods, the butchering and processing was also accomplished at home. You raised it, killed it, butchered it and processed it. Therefore you knew exactly what was in it.
Well, even though most people no longer raise or hunt their own meat, you can still know what goes into at least some of the meat you eat. Ground beef is used in lots of the meat dishes we prepare today from the fourth of July hamburger, the chili on a cold winter night, or the spaghetti made for the church social. By using a meat mincer or meat grinder as they are also called, you can produce some of the best tasting meats you have ever eaten and also save you some money. The money savings come from purchasing quality meats in bulk and grinding your own fresh ground beef. Once you taste ground beef make fresh from steaks or other lean cuts of meat, you will likely never purchase pre-packaged ground beef again.

Another benefit to a meat grinder besides tasty meats, is the health benefits you can achieve. Many people today are on restrictive diets which require them to eat only lean cuts of meat. By grinding their own meats, they can be sure that the amount of fat their ground meats contain is kept to a bare minimum. In addition to grinding meat, you can also use your mincer to grind up nuts, fruit, cheese, and vegetables. This means you can produce any number of healthy salads and the dressings with which to top them.

If you happen to be one the people out there who still have the time and enjoy hunting as one of your hobbies, having your own meat grinder is almost an absolute must. Anyone that has tasted the fresh ground deer sausage or chili made with fresh ground deer knows what meat is truly supposed to taste like. There are numerous meat processors out there that will cut up and process the meat from that deer you killed, but do you really know you got the meat from the deer that you made sure got to the processor before there was any chance the meat could become tainted? If you processed and ground your meat with your own home meat mincer, there would be no doubt that the meat you feed your family and friends is exactly what you meant for it to be.

A History of the Waterways Barge Building in France

A History of the Waterways Barge Building in France

A History of the Waterways Barge Building in France

Though you may be a lover of barge holidays in France, how much do you actually know about the history of this mode of transportation? Although the waterways are now reserved for leisure activities, tourism and barge holidays, France once relied on the humble barge to maintain and grow its economy. In fact, for centuries canals and rivers were essential components of Frances trade network, linking the English Channel, the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.
Standardisation and Transportation

Despite these all-important river links, transportation was slow due to a lack of standardisation across the country. At the end of the nineteenth century, the then Minister of Public Works, de Freycinet, had a light bulb moment: he decided to regulate the network of waterways by building the same sized lock country-wide. This lock was to be 40m x 5.20m and, once they were installed, boats had to be redesigned to fit inside. The new wooden vessels, sometimes known as Freycinet barges, were built in dimensions of 38.5m by 5.05m as standard. These modern, standardised cargo-carriers could deliver goods across Europe.

However, how did these non-motorised vessels move around the intricate network of European canals? The answer is man power although actually towing was carried out by women, horses and even children throughout the 1800s, as well as men. Some such as Klippers and Tjalks travelling to England used sail-power and others, in Belgium and the Netherlands, were towed by steam-powered tug boats. Progress, though faster due to standardisation, could not be called speedy as most people would be travelling at walking pace.

Fuelling the Nation

In a drastic change to how canal transport operated, the 1900s saw the introduction of diesel engines which did away with the need for towing altogether. However, as the engines were not very powerful, motorized vessels such as Spitzen and Luxemotors had to have distinctive pointed bows similar to the tug. These new creations were extremely luxurious as they were equipped with a kitchen and toilet more than some houses at the time and were independent.

By the 1920s wooden hulls had been exchanged for steel, making stronger, more resilient cargo-carriers that could withstand potential clashes with locks. Twenty years later the diesel engine had gained much more power and many motorised barges were built across France, Belgium and the Netherlands. This was the peak of this industry in Europe. Non-motorized vessels were towed by diesel-powered tractors, rather than horses, so journey times were considerably decreased.

Goodbye to All That?

The decline of French water transport began in the 1970s as the faster and more efficient railways and road vehicles gained in popularity. The canals, once the lifeblood of the country, fell into disrepair and were sadly not restored. Hundreds of Freycinet barges were scrapped and it seemed like it was the end of the line for this once-important vessel.

Fortunately, barge holidays in France have kept this traditional form of water transport alive. Tourism bloomed in the 1970s, drawing visitors to Frances canals and rivers have not abated in nearly four decades. Barge holidays in France show off the most beautiful and interesting regions of the country to visitors who appreciate the gentle pace, and alternative view point, that a hotel barge affords them.

Paul Newman is the Marketing and E-Systems Executive for European Waterways, the UK's most respected provider if you're looking for all-inclusive, luxury barge holidays in France or other great destinations. Part of a team of experienced barging aficionados, Paul is first in line to endorse the perks of a slow-paced barge cruise to anyone looking for a unique holiday experience.

A Guide To Central Heating And Air Conditioning

A Guide To Central Heating And Air Conditioning

A Guide To Central Heating And Air Conditioning

Central heating is important in the places where winters can be chilly and this system can be powered by gas, oil, electricity, solid fuel and solar power. The primary heating appliance is located in garage or basement and the heat is delivered throughout the house with the help of air ducts or sending steam or water through pipers to convectors or room radiators. Whatever form of heating is used, it is important to have good insulation in the house else almost 60% of the generated heat is lost through roof and walls.

In the regions where summer temperatures can reach over 40C, people prefer to install air-conditioners. An air-conditioner system with heat pump gives cooling in the summer and heating in the winters.

Humidifiers and De-humidifiers

Central heating and air conditioning systems considerably dry the air and it may have some negative effects on the health of your family. People who suffer from ailments such as asthma or cough should install humidifiers as they pass moisture to the air. Humidifiers can be as simple as containers of simple water hung from radiators to battery or electrical-operated devices. If you use humidifier that does not generate steam, it is important to disinfect them occasionally with a liquid available at chemist shops.

On the other hand, if cause of concern is high level of humidity, it is worth installing de-humidifiers especially in bedrooms so that clothes and linens do not get mouldy. De-humidifiers can be very useful in the coastal areas where humidity levels can be very high, especially during winters.

Central Heating and Air Conditioning

Central heating and air conditioning are forced air systems where cooled and humidified air is delivered through same registers and ductwork used by heated air. Air conditioner runs on electricity, removing heat from the air using basic refrigeration principles. Heat pump can provide both cooling and heating effects. During winters, heat from the outside air is extracted by heat pump and delivered indoors. During summers, it extracts the heat from the air inside the room and pumps it outdoor to make the house cooler.

If you are planning to install a new central heating and air conditioning unit, choose a good heating and air conditioning contractor, as proper installation and maintenance is important for the equipment to run safely and effectively.

Most of the heat pumps are powered by electricity. The outdoor condenser/ compressor unit is connected with tubing filled with refrigerant to the indoor air handler. Refrigerant moves through the system completing basic refrigeration cycle, cooling and warming the coils inside air handler and blower circulates air in the room.

Central Heating and Air Conditioning Maintenance

With proper maintenance, central heating and air conditioning should last 12-14 years. It is important to have routine maintenance such as making sure that the unit is not leaking and draining is working, as it should. Too much water should not be allowed to remain in the system. Check the hose connections for any cracks or leaks and make sure that condensate tube is draining without impediment. It is important to change the filter every 4-5 weeks.

A Checklist for Bathroom Remodeling Plans

A Checklist for Bathroom Remodeling Plans

Careful planning is the key to a successful bathroom-remodeling project. Before you begin any work in the bathroom, create a budget, a floor plan, a list of supplies, a timetable, and important legal considerations. Let's break it down by subject.

First, create a budget. Determine how much money you can comfortably spend, and save about 20 percent for emergencies. Get estimates for the work that needs professionals, and always include electrical, plumbing, heating and cooling, and drywall installation costs in your budget.

Second, design a floor plan. Ask yourself, will you be working with the existing space or will you be adding on or knocking down walls? Check to make sure you will not disturb the electrical wiring, plumbing, or zoning regulations. Next, measure the amount of space you have and draw a floor plan. In drawing the plan, first put in all the items that are fixed. For example, if the toilet must be in one place because of plumbing, it is a fixed item. Experiment with how you like your floor plan, using different arrangements, with different types of cabinetry, shelves, or even walls. You might try pocket doors to save space, and corner sinks, floating sinks, or pedestal sinks to save even more space. L-shaped vanities and alcoves also save space. In addition, corner showers conserve space, and clear glass in showers creates the illusion of even more space. You may want to add windows or mirrors to let in light.

Third, make a list of the supplies you'll need and make sure they are available when you need them. Some typical supplies include sinks, flooring, wall tile, countertops, lighting, medicine cabinets, showers, bath tubs, cabinets and cabinet handles, toilets, extra storage, faucets, toilet paper holders, paint or wallpaper, chairs, accessories (like storage containers and/or artwork), as well as tools you have or can buy.

Fourth, create a timetable. Talk to experts or people at home improvement stores to plan how much time you'll need. If you're hiring contractors, work with them to design a timetable you all can follow.

Plan projects according to the time you have available. Put in a new toilet and sink one weekend, for example, and paint another. You don't have to do it all at once, so plan sensibly. Don't paint the walls or install woodwork until the hardware is taken care of -- you don't want to damage work you've already done. Above all, be flexible and allow time for the unexpected or even emergencies to happen.

Fifth, keep in mind legal considerations. Get and post a building permit, pay any necessary fees, make sure you, your contractor, and any workers have insurance coverage, and keep children and animals away from the construction area.

By following these checklists, your bathroom remodeling plans will be a snap.

A Beginners Guide to Cooking

For many, cooking is seen as a costly, time-consuming and quite often daunting activity for those who havent got the time or much experience when it comes to cooking. The thought of trying something new may be appealing but many cannot quite muster the motivation to go forth and do so.

There are however a number of advantages in taking the leap and venturing into the culinary realm and it really is not as hard as you may think.

Cooking your own meals from scratch can ultimately save you time and money. A little stint in the kitchen can take care of several future meals and thanks to the freezer, perhaps a few more.

Pasta dishes are a good starting point for beginners as the key ingredients; pasta and sauce are widely available in many flavours, shapes and sizes in your local supermarket. Its easy to cook up a quick and tasty meal which you can have for dinner and perhaps lunch the following day. As you gain more confidence in cooking, why not experiment with your own variations by adding in additional ingredients such as mushrooms and peppers or even make the pasta and sauce from scratch.

Bread-making is also an easy and rewarding way to get into cooking. An episode of Hugh-Fearnley Whittingstalls television programme River Cottage Every Day recently aired on Channel 4 which focused on bread-making promoting how easy, delicious, satisfying and quick it is for anyone to make at home. One featured recipe was for Guinness, apple and cheese soda bread which only takes 3-4 minutes to make and pop in the oven.

Bread is such a versatile food and as there are so many different varieties, it makes another ideal starting point for a beginner cook to get stuck in to and later experiment with.

Making your own variations of traditional recipes allows you to discover new flavours as you can produce something you can be proud of. For example you could change the fillings in tarts and cheesecakes or even adapting the classic sausage and mash dish by adding spring onions and cheese to the mash and wholegrain mustard and red wine to the gravy.

In many cases, what comes out of the oven will often not quite match the recipe book picture, although practice does indeed make perfect and a certain degree of trial and error is involved which is what makes cooking exciting as the possibilities are endless.

The finished product of your cooking efforts is always something you can take pride in as it is a rewarding and relaxing way to escape and unwind from your day-to-day life. Also having known exactly what has gone into your dish makes it even more satisfying.

If youre a relatively experienced cook in baking, but a complete beginner to Thai cuisine for example, why not branch out and try a totally new cuisine? With a little guidance to get you going there is nothing to stop you from moving out of your comfort zone and trying something new.

With a little practice or a cookery lesson or two, you can quickly build up your confidence in the kitchen and perhaps find something you have a great passion for you dont know until youve tried it!

17 Tips for Improving the Resale Value of your Home

Anyone selling their property wants to get the maximum amount for the sale. Sometimes a few small improvements can dramatically increase the sale price and help to sell the property more quickly. Conversely, anything that is not maintained can bring the price down, make your property less appealing and take longer to sell.

Most people dont want to go to the trouble of making repairs on a newly purchased home. They want it ready to move right in. Here are some tips to improve the resale value of your property.

Curb Appeal

Creating a great curb appeal will help to create a great first impression for your property. As we all know first impressions make people interested to see more.

1. Start by weeding your garden and cutting back any overgrown and removing any dead trees completely. Cut the lawns and put tan bark in the garden beds.

2. Paint boundary fences charcoal to make your plants and flowers really stand out.

3. Use a high-pressure water hose to wash down concrete paths and the driveway. Paint that can be applied to concrete paths is also an economical way to improve the appearance of your property.

4. Paint your front door and make sure the door handles are working properly and the door itself opens and closes smoothly.

In the Kitchen

The kitchen is a big focus for many home buyers, particularly people who like cooking and entertaining. If you have the money to spend and your kitchen needs updating, this is the room which you should place the most emphasis on.

5. Painting or replacing cupboard doors in an older kitchen is a great way to give your kitchen a new look without doing a full renovation.

6. If your budget allows it, replace any kitchen appliances that might be looking old. New kitchen appliances can greatly increase the value of a property. Appliances with a stainless steel finish give the house a modern look.

7. Clean your windows inside and out, including the fly screens. If windows a hard to reach, you could consider hiring a professional cleaning company that has all of the necessary equipment.

In the Living Room

8. You should only use light, neutral colors for painting your walls. Avoid wallpaper and feature type walls that may not appeal to everyone.

9. Bulky furniture and any other excess clutter should be removed from the property. Storage lockers are great for this and it is a great way start preparing for your move.

10. Carpeted areas should be steam cleaned. If the carpets are in good condition they can look almost new again. Floorboards can be cleaned and polished. If they are in bad condition, you should consider sanding them and applying a new lacquer.

11. A fireplace in homes in a cooler climate or a water feature in homes in warmer climates can create an interesting focal point in a house.

12. Remove things of a personal nature, such as family photos, children's drawings etc.

Bedrooms

13. You can create an extra bedroom by converting a sunroom or utility room into an extra bedroom, depending on the market you are trying to attract. A 4 bedroom house will often sell for more than a 3 bedroom house. Similarly, if you are marketing your property towards couples with no kids, you could convert a smaller bedroom into an office. Your real estate agent will be able to provide advice on who best to market your property towards.

14. Make sure your closets are clean and tidy and not jam packed with stuff. Potential buyers will definitely open closets to see how much storage space you have.

15. Consider replacing blinds or curtains with new ones. They can be relatively inexpensive, but create a big impact with potential buyers.

Bathroom

16. Be aware of any funny smells in your bathroom, particularly the drainage pipes. Try flushing them out with a cleaning solution. Your bathroom should be spotless and free of any mould.

17. Pack away your toothbrushes and other personal items where they arent out on display.

13 Ways You Can Repurpose Household Items

In past decades, it was common to fix what that got broken or no longer worked. Today, our society has made a habit of quickly replacing products at the slightest sign of a defect or scratch, which has significantly increased the amount of waste that accumulates each year. Most purchased items are thrown away within six months. To reduce the amount of waste generated and care for the planet, there are a few alternate uses for common home items.

1. Plastic Straw
Colorful drinking straws can be used to prevent too much water from coming into contact with the flower stems in a vase. Use straws either in bright colors or those that blend in with the stems to extend the lifespan of your flowers and allow them to thrive.

2. Mouse Pads
Mouse pads can be used in more ways than what they were originally intended for. They can also be cut into fun designs and coaster shapes. The material is durable and will prevent moisture from coming into contact with the surface of a coffee table. The pad is also an insulator of heat and will prevent hot cups or mugs from damaging your tables. There is a number of different color mousepads, which can also make it easy to create decorative trivets to use in the kitchen.

3. Rubber Bands
Rubber bands are a household item that is extremely versatile and can be used in a number of ways. They were originally patented in 1845 and continue to be used for their ability to bind different items. Use rubber bands on glassware if you have children around, because their little fingers will need a better grip. At childrens parties, use different color rubber bands to mark each individual childs glass. In the summertime or spring, you can wrap them around hangers to prevent light shirts or blouses from slipping off.

4. Bread Box
Although bread boxes were commonly used in the '80s and '90s, they are now somewhat outdated, but a new purpose is all it needs to make them cool again. Upcycle your bread box by turning it into a charging station for smartphones and tablets. Drill holes in the back where the cords can fit through and insert an MDF board as the divider. Label each slit to make it easy to find each charger.

5. Toilet Paper Roll
Instead of tossing out old toilet paper rolls, use it to suck up dust and dirt in windows and doors by placing it over the nozzle of the vacuum cleaner.

6. Plastic Bottles
Ever been a student away on college or moved to a new home? Cutlery may be hard to find in all that mess. Make your own forks, spoons and knives out of old plastic bottles that are lying around the house. You can bend the plastic and create smooth edges by using a lighter.

7. Lotion and Shampoo Bottles
A common inconvenience in the home is having your phone lie on the floor as it charges next to an outlet. Use a lotion or shampoo bottle that will fit your device, decorate it as you wish and cut a hole at the top you will use to hang that charging station.

8. Old Trays
Create a vintage setting in your home by displaying old food trays on the walls, which will give your kitchen or dining room that antique and eclectic look everyone who visits will be jealous of.

9. Cheese Graters
You can create a work of art out of old graters by nailing the kitchen tool to a wood plank and turning it upside down to use as light sconces or lampshades. The innovative product will look unique in your home and stand out in the kitchen or dining room.

10. Old Frames
Take out the matting and glass in old frames to use the product as a necklace or earring holder. Install hooks on the frame to hold necklaces and old lace or thread where earrings can be secured.

11. Old Chairs
Instead of tossing out old chairs that are no longer used, transform the standard household item into a flowerpot holder after adding a fresh coat of paint.

12. Changing Tables
Parents sometimes have a difficult time separating from all their kids essentials like toys, strollers and the like. Create a decorative wine cart out of the old changing table that is no longer used in nurseries, but which will stay with you for a long time to come.

13. Outdated Computers
With the right safety equipment and tools, you can transform outdated computers into fish tanks. Remove the CRT, make a plexiglass tank and add a large hole at the top of the monitor as an access panel. Use aquarium sealant used after removing the wires, fill the tank and watch your screen saver come alive.

Upcycling home items will allow you to reuse household products that can contribute to the functionality of decor of your home. The items may be considered junk, but you can transform them into one-of-a-kind treasures. Think about how you can create something new out of old valuables and prevent more products from being sent to the junk yard.

13 Things You Need for a New Bathroom

Your bathroom says a lot about you. How clean you keep it, what kind of products you use, and how good it smells are signals to a guest about what kind of person you are (or arent). If your bathroom is looking a little dismal these days, but you dont want to spend a fortune to make it look brand new, follow these tips for a rejuvenated freshness in your sanctum of cleanliness.

1. Cleaning products: should be bought on a regular basis and used weekly. These include a toilet bowl scrubber, bleach, lots of bleach, mildew remover, soap, and whatever else you may need.

2. Paint: if your walls are grungy, a splash of color could do you well. Choose a good bathroom color, like blue or dark green and throw on a couple of coats to make it look brand new.

3. Shower curtain: a funky shower curtain can go a long way. This really gives you a chance to get creative, but dont get anything too cheesy. If you want something simple, get a clear curtain and a heavier, neutral colored fabric over it.

4. Furniture: Head to Ikea, where their streamlined designs have been pleasing people all over the world for decades. A small cabinet will help you keep all of your toiletries in order. Dont forget the meatballs.

5. Trash can: look for one with a swinging door, to prevent people from seeing already disposed trash.

6. Tealight tray: having candles in the bathroom is romantic and relaxing. If you want to destress after a long day at work, or maybe set the mood with a lover, a tray for candles will help you reduce clutter and stay sexy.

7. Door Hook: hang up laundry to avoid messy floor piles, and use it to let towels dry.

8. New Towels: can be better for your skin, and will look nicer than the bleach stained towels youve had for years. You dont have to throw away the old ones, just dont display them for everyone to see. Two full size, two handcloths, and two facial cloth towels comprise a full set.

9. Full length mirror: is perfect for checking yourself out before you leave your pad.

10. Showerhead: Invest in one thats removable so you can spray all those hard to reach areas. Different settings can relax your body with a massage pulse or make you feel like youre in a rainforest if you use a light spray.

11. Body wash: a nice one without the heavy perfume of many body washes will make your shower, and you, smell better.

12. Knobs: If you want a full facelift for your bathroom, start thinking about some new knobs and handles around your sink. Then think about the

13. Faucet: Having a new faucet and sink is an investment, but its one that can go a long way to making your bathroom a place where you want to spend time.
